Canada Workers' Benefits (CWB):

If you or your spouse earns income through work and falls into the category of low-income group, then you or your spouse may be eligible for Canadian workers' benefits (CWB).

What is CWB?

The program provides assistance to low-income taxpayers. It is an advance refundable payment you will receive at the time of tax filing and pay later.

Under this scheme, you and your spouse can get fifty percent of CWB in advance without waiting for tax time.

Who Can Benefit from the CWB:

  • Earning income by working
  • A resident of Canada all year round,
  • At least nineteen years old or living with your spouse or common-law partner's child

  • Your spouse or kid of your common-law partner?

There are two supplements to CWB:

The basic amount

Every low-income group taxpayer living in Canada throughout the year is eligible to get the basic amount. It is governed by certain factors like marital status, the reliability of eligible family members, and your net income.

As your income increases, the basic amount is reduced, and at a certain level, it is withdrawn.

The Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP)

What is ODSP?

This is a social assistance programme for Ontario's disabled citizens. This scheme provides income and employment support to the disabled citizens of Ontario.

This helps disabled people who need financial support for their food items, housing needs, and health needs, like medicine and optical needs.

This scheme should be used as a last resort, and before going for it, the following options should be explored:

  • He/she should search for a job.
  • Contact: Canadian Pension Plan Disability Benefit (CPP-D)
  • Contact the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB)

Who Qualifies for ODSP:

You are eligible for this programme if you are:

  • Living in Canada
  • aged eighteen years or more.
  • I need financial support.
  • declared a disabled person under the ODSP Act

According to the ODSP Act, a person is disabled if he/she is physically and mentally disabled for one year or more. To establish the disability, the individual will go through the process set by ODSP. Furthermore, this disability restricts the individual from:

  • Work
  • Participating in community life
  • Taking care of himself or herself

A health care professional will assess and confirm the disability, its duration, and restrictions.

Can You Receive ODSP Income Support and Work Simultaneously?

You can work and still receive income support, but you will tell your caseworker, who will guide you, how your work will affect your income support and whether you qualify for work-related costs.

What If I Need Money Immediately?

If you need money immediately, you should apply to Ontario Works, a social assistance program. Here, the process is short and you will get the amount earlier. But, you should tell your Ontario Works staff that you also qualify for ODSP and they will help you process your case with ODSP.

Employment Support Programs: What Is ODSP?

The ODSP employment support programme assists declared disabled individuals in obtaining, preparing for, or maintaining employment.

ODSP also helps those who are not getting jobs or are without a job for a certain period.

Who Can Apply for the ODSP Employment Support Program:

If you are receiving ODSP income support, you are automatically eligible for the ODSP employment support program, but participation in this scheme is at your will.

If you are not an ODSP income support beneficiary, you are still eligible if:

  • You live in Ontario.
  • Your age is 16 or more.
  • You are a disabled person and your disability is hampering you from searching for and doing a job.

How You Can Apply for ODSP Employment Support:

  • You can visit or call the ODSP local office.
  • You can apply online.

If you need more information, you should visit your ODSP local office, visit the website Ontario.ca/socialassistance, or call 1-888-789-4199.
