2022 - 2023 ODSP Payment Dates, Benefit Amounts and Application

In Ontario, the ODSP is a welfare program funded by the Ontario government that is available to individuals who are unable to work due to medical conditions or disabilities. As well as health benefits, it provides financial assistance for basic needs such as housing, food, and clothing.

Our first point of discussion will be the ODSP payment dates for 2023. The next step is to describe in detail what this program involves, what benefits are available, and how to apply. Let's begin.

What Is ODSP?

The Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) provides an income and employment support service to residents of Ontario who are living with a disability.

Program beneficiaries have benefited from the ODSP program since 1997, when the Government of Ontario passed the ODSP Act. As of October 2020, there were more than 520,000 people receiving assistance from the ODSP program. The Ontario government's AISH program represents the equivalent program to that of the government of Alberta.

ODSP Payment Dates

ODSP payments are expected to be released by the provincial government on the last day of every month. Beneficiaries can pay monthly or at the beginning of each month by transferring funds. This will enable them to take care of their monthly expenses.

The decision is a relatively good one over using payments at the beginning of every month, since those receiving social assistance must set aside a portion of the allowance for expenses at the end of the month, such as rent.

Dates for ODSP payments in 2023 are:

ODSP Benefits

The ODSP provides a number of benefits to recipients, including:

  1. Assisting with income

People who need help with housing and basic needs like food and clothes get help with their income. Some sources of income are exempt and won't change whether you can get ODSP income support or how much you can get. Exempt income includes payments from a Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP), loans for education costs from the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), and child support.

  1. Allowance for Basic Needs under the ODSP

Basic needs assistance from the ODSP pays for food, clothes, and other things that people need to get by every day. The amount you get back will depend on how many people are in your family, how old they are, and whether or not your spouse or partner also has a disability.

As of September 2022, a single person can get up to $1,228 a month to help pay for their expenses.

  1. Allowance for shelter under ODSP

Housing costs, such as rent, mortgage payments, property taxes, utilities, and other expenses associated with a primary residence are usually covered by the ODSP shelter allowance.

An allowance for shelter is calculated taking into account the actual shelter expenses up to a maximum amount that differs according to the number of family members.

Family sizeMaximum monthly shelter allowance
1$522
2$821
3$889
4$964
5$1,041
6+$1,078
  1. Allowance for board and lodging

For ODSP recipients who receive lodging and board from the same source, the calculation of their income support is different from the calculation for those who do not.

In this case, the beneficiary will only get the ODSP basic needs and shelter allowance in one payment and not both at the same time. Family size, dependent children's age, home location, individuals' circumstances, as well as the size of the family will influence the ODSP rate.

In order to receive ODSP benefits for board and lodging, a family member can receive an ODSP payment beginning at $825. For each additional family member following that, the annual amount increases.

  1. Health Benefits under ODSP

The following health benefits may be available to ODSP beneficiaries and their families:

  • Coverage for prescription drugs. When it comes to drugs that are listed in the Ontario Drug Formulary or prescribed by a healthcare professional who has been approved
  • Coverage for dental care. Healthy Smiles Ontario will provide free dental services to children under the age of 17. While adults receive basic dental care and any additional treatment that is necessary due to their disability or prescribed treatment.
  • Insurance coverage for medical supplies. Syringes, monitors of blood glucose, and surgical supplies for diabetics are included in this package.
  • Vision Care. A basic eye examination on a regular basis, along with a major eye examination if the medical condition affects the eyes.
  • Provides coverage for medical transportation. If you spend more than $15 per month on travel to and from a doctor appointment, it is covered by this policy.
  • Allowance for nutrition. Up to $50 per month may be provided to pregnant or nursing mothers or their family members who receive income support.
  • Benefits that include extended health coverage. People with income support eligibility who have high medical costs but are not eligible for income support
  • Health Benefits for Transition. If a recipient leaves ODSP in order to work, the program covers prescription medications, dental care and vision care.

ODSP Eligibility

In order to receive ODSP benefits, one must meet the following criteria

Age

The minimum age to qualify for income support is 18 years of age for applicants who apply for the program. It is possible to apply up to six months before the applicant turns 18 years of age.

In order to qualify for Employment Support, you need to be 16 years of age or older.

Residency

If you are a resident of Ontario, you may be eligible to receive both income and employment supports. Furthermore, for employment support to be provided to you, you must be legally authorized to work in Canada.

Disability

There is no doubt about this. Applicants for the ODSP must have a physical or mental disability that has a significant impact on their ability to earn a living and support their household.

The ODSP Act provides for a detailed definition of disability that can be summarized as follows:

  • Almost certainly, the applicant suffers from mental or physical health concerns that will persist for more than a year
  • The applicant's disability directly explains why they are incapable of working, caring for themselves, or becoming members of the community.
  • An authorized health care professional has verified the impairment, as well as its duration and restrictions.

Applying For ODSP

It depends on the type of support you're applying for if you need a different application process and forms to complete: Income or employment-related support

Online applications can be submitted, as can phone applications or in-person applications at ODSP offices throughout the province. Although, even if you begin the ODSP online, you will still need to meet with a caseworker at a nearby ODSP office.

Just in case, read the eligibility requirements as well.

Before you can start your application, you will need the following:

  • Number of your social security card (SIN)
  • Birth certificates for yourself and your dependents
  • Cards provided by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP)
  • Documentation regarding your immigration status
  • Information about your bank account

ODSP will require you to provide them with a basic understanding of your financial situation. In addition to your income and assets, you will need to explain any costs or expenses that you have. A caseworker will conduct a thorough financial assessment, so you must provide accurate information. Generally, medical practitioners familiar with your case will be responsible for handling the medical aspects of your application.

Conclusion

Before you apply for yourself or on behalf of someone else, it is imperative to understand how ODSP benefits work. You can use every piece of information you possess to plan your finances, from benefit information to ODSP payment dates. As a result of our discussion, we hope that we have addressed most of your questions regarding the ODSP.
