That is a direct deposit from the Government of Canada. It’s not a scam.
It could be a lot of things.
- Income Tax Refund — did you file a return recently?
- GST rebate for low-income earners — four times a year, I think
- Child Tax benefit if you are low income and have kids
You can call Revenue Canada and speak to an agent. You’ll have to wait in line but they are super nice and helpful once you get them.
Have your SIN number ready. Also, have a copy of last year’s tax return or tax assessment form (that they mailed you) in case they ask — this is optional. Don’t worry if you can’t find them.
They will quickly be able to explain the refund to you. If it’s not from them, then it IS a scam.
